Grand Theft Auto has always been one of the most successful video game franchises of all time and it continues to break new records every time a new game in the series comes out. While we used to have a new Grand Theft Auto game once every few years originally, we, unfortunately, haven’t seen a new game in the series since the year of 2013.
That is, of course, because of how successful and profitable the standalone Grand Theft Auto Online became which allowed Rockstar to maintain a consistent product which they update from time to time – while they were able to use most of their resources to create Red Dead Redemption 2, which unsurprisingly broke records too.
After all, what’s better than being able to play a game with your friends without needing to buy specific hardware. It’s 2021 and people want the convenience of playing the same game irrespective of what platform they’re on and that’s why cross-platform multiplayer is such a requested feature.
Finding out the answer can take a lot of time, so we’re going to give you the answer before you spend any money! Is Grand Theft Auto Online cross-play? Let’s find out.
Grand Theft Auto Cross-Play Explained
Before we answer the big question – let’s take a moment to talk about what cross-platform multiplayer means for those who might be unaware of what it means.
There are three unique terminologies that are used in terms of context related to cross-platform capabilities. The first one is cross-play, which means that players should be able to enjoy the game with any of their friends regardless of what platform that they’re on as long as their game is updated to the same version.
For example, someone on a PlayStation 4 should be able to play with their friend on a PC – and also the other way around.
The second thing is cross-progression which means that the game is able to allow players to have the same progress on multiple platforms. For example, someone on an Xbox One should be able to play on a PlayStation 4 on the same level as they were previously without having to start over from 0 experience.
And lastly, we have cross-generation multiplayer which means that players are able to enjoy the game with their friends on a different console of the same brand. For example, they can play the game on a PlayStation 4 with someone on a PlayStation 5 – but not with an Xbox or PC.
With all of these questions answered, let’s move onto the real thing and talk about if GTA V has cross-play or not!
Is Grand Theft Auto Online Cross-Play?
Grand Theft Auto Online is available on many different platforms which include the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, and PC. With the game being available and functional on so many different platforms, you’d expect it to have cross-platform multiplayer.
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Grand Theft Auto V does not have cross-platform multiplayer and is limited to each generation and brand that it’s on. For example, PS3 players can only play with PS3 players. PS4 players can only play with PS4 players. Xbox One players can only play with Xbox One players, and so on – you get the idea.
The closest thing the game has to cross-generation multiplayer at the moment is between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 as you can play the enhanced version of the game on the PS5 and have the same players as PS4 around.
The same goes for the Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles. However, this is expected to change with the next-generation standalone Grand Theft Auto Online coming out a bit later on the PlayStation 5.
Perhaps this might change with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, but for now, it’s unlikely since even Red Dead Redemption 2 is not cross-play.
Is Grand Theft Auto V Cross-Platform between PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4?
No, Grand Theft Auto V and Online are not cross-play supported between these three platforms – you can only play them with players of their own ecosystem.
Is Grand Theft Auto V coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X?
Rockstar has announced a special Grand Theft Auto V port for the PlayStation 5 sometime in the future, but there has been little news for the Xbox Series X and S versions. However, you can play Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X thanks to the consoles’ capability of running enhanced versions of eighth generation games.
And that’s everything that we know so far about Grand Theft Auto V’s cross-platform multiplayer at the moment, we hope that you found the guide useful. And while you’re here, there are tons of other helpful gaming guides on our website too.
