HP Pavilion 27xw Review: Still Worth Buying In 2024?

hp pavilion 27xw review

So I’ve been using the HP 27xw monitor for a while, over 2 months and I’m going to share everything it is to know about this monitor so you can make an informed decision before you buy.

The HP Pavilion 27xw is still one of the most beautiful monitors the company has made till today and even though it’s been discontinued many years ago, you’ll still find it available to buy from giant e-commerce retailers like Amazon, my personal unit came from there.

This monitor is very eye-catching with a beautiful thin silver and white design that is meant to stun, alas the most important thing for a monitor is not how it looks but how it makes the visuals on its look.

The HP Pavilion 27xw monitor spots a 1920 x 1080p @ 60 Hz screen refresh rate and has low power consumption. One of the most attractive things about it too is the $199 cheap price tag. In this review, we’ll break down the most important aspect of this monitor and in the end, should be able to determine if it’s a right fit for you or not.

HP Pavilion 27xw Design

When looking for an HP monitor to buy, if you’re presented with the HP 27xw among other options, chances are that you’ll be drawn to it like moths to a flame.

This 27″ monitor is super slim and the design is minimal, elegant, and well done. The bezels are tiny and it allows for incredible ultrawide viewing with an insane screen-to-body ratio.

Pairing it to your PC also shouldn’t be an issue as it comes with 2 HDMI ports and 1 VGA port. Getting this monitor to work with your MacBook means you’ll have to get a USB-C to HDMI cable to be able to get the second display from your MacBook onto the device.

Design-wise, you have nothing to worry about. It’s lightweight and easy to move around. The packaging box is also not heavy and while it does not have support for adjustable height, the tilt mechanism is pretty good and it checks all the boxes.

HP Pavilion 27xw Display

Now here’s where things start to get a bit dicey, but don’t worry, I’m going to give it to you as it is.

It’s been a couple of calm, stable months with this monitor, nothing wild, works as it should, no weird surprises and it does its job quite well but the resolution, graphics it outputs, the display generally, stopped being cool in 2019.

Don’t get me wrong, the display is still very much okay. In fact, I’m going to go on the record here and say you should buy it but wait till the end of the article before you make a decision.

If you’re a webmaster or a designer or both like I am, despite seeing that this is a 1080p display with IPS panel technology, you may think this is great for the price but, it’s probably not for you. The colors are not that accurate and for designers, this is a big deal.

You probably should look elsewhere.

If you’re not a designer and you’re just looking for an additional screen to add to your home or office and work, use the internet, and just have fun, you should totally consider buying it then.

The display is good enough for basic use and justifies the low price point for a monitor screen size this huge. The display is also super bright, so much that I don’t go past 50% brightness.

It also comes equipped with different picture controls like brightness, contrasts, color settings to help finetune the display. It also has the low blue light mode where it warms up the screen color to avoid eye strain, you can turn that on easily in the settings.

For basic use, you’re good to go. It’s a fine machine.

HP Pavilion 27xw Price and Other things to note

So the price of this monitor as at the time of writing this is $199 from Amazon. Other monitors in its screen size and display tech range from that amount up to $299. This option should help save you money.

This particular model is also discontinued and if you’re looking for something a little bit more recent, this isn’t the option for you.

This monitor is also power-efficient and does not take a toll on your usage.

HP Pavilion 27xw FAQ

I put together a couple of questions you may have for someone who’s actually using the monitor in case you want to buy.

Can you wall-mount the HP Pavilion 27xw?

The answer is yes but it’s a bit complicated as it doesn’t come equipped with the resources to do that, you’d have to sort yourself out.

Does the HP Pavilion 27xw have speakers?

No, it does not, and neither does it have a provision for audio of any kind. No headphone jack, nothing. You’d have to rely on your PC for audio like I do when using an HDMI cable connection.

Is the height of this monitor adjustable?

No, it isn’t. The tilting mechanism however is so on point, you’ll play with it a lot without noticing.

Is this a great monitor for gaming?

Noooooooooooooo. Consider something with a little bit more like the Asus VP28UQG 28 Inch monitor, slightly bigger too at 28″, 4k available but no HDR. Close price point.

Does the HP Pavilion 27xw consume much power?

Absolutely not, it’s power-friendly. I use it with my cheap inverter and it gets through the day on little to no charge.

Can you tilt this monitor sideways?

To get probably a portrait look of your display? No, you can’t. The screen does not tilt sideways.

Wrapping it up

Here’s all I can tell you from memory, my experience with the HP Pavilion 27xw. Highly recommended if you’re not going to depend on it for some color, or screen accurate intensive work.

As a main or second display for a web trotter, not the product, you should be fine, Please leave a comment below if you have additional questions, I’m happy to answer them for you.
